Balanganson began in 2000, following the success of its "big brother" Balangandan - a larger latin jazz band.
Led by percussionist Tim Dodd, it is a sweet but hard-hitting 5 -7 piece traditional Afro-Cuban "Son" band, working in the style of the popular "Buena Vista Social Club".
The band features the sensual but driving sound of the Cuban "tres" guitar, along with the trumpet and violin, supported by a rhythm section of electric bass, timbales, conga drums and 2 to 3 voices (some singing while playing other instruments).
The majority of the musicians originate form Cuba and Colombia, giving the band great authenticity and swing, and features the vocals and tres of Cuban singer Jesus Cutiño, vocals and bass playing of Elpidio Caicedo from Colombia, and Cuban Ernesto Estruch on violin.
Balaganson embrace the the essence of traditional Cuban Son music; their performance is lively, interactive and contagious: and can be either 'full-on' for a dance occasion or more restrained for a background music 'vibe' at cocktail parties or dinner functions.
Balanganson has had a residency at the fashionable "Momo's" club, and plays at music venues and private/corporate events.
